You could even attach the tripod mount of the 85-250 to the support as
well. This would preclude using the telescoping function of the 65~116
unless you cut a slot and used a thumb screw. Or you could drill several
holes  in the metal support at varying extensions. This would sure make
the setup much more secure and take the strain off the lens and tube. A
piece of aluminum channel or tube would work and is cheap and easy to drill.
