Hi, all.

Mine has a really *slight* play at the aperture ring (say 0.2-0.3 mm) and
no play at all on the focusing ring. Does the picture thru the viewfinder
shift a little with the play of the focusing ring? If not, I don't think
it's a serious problem -- provided you get a reasonable price.

>b.) the focussing ring moves easier than on any other Zuiko I own

Mine seems to move slightly easier than other Zuikos, except the most worn
ones... Well, this is a small lens, and the helicoid should have less
friction surface; I think it's OK.

>c.) I couldn't find a white stamp on the backside for the production date

'HID9' here. Yours is marked 'ZUIKO MC' at the front, or just 'ZUIKO' (like
mine)?

>What are the LAST typical market prices ?

I think somewhere between $400-$500 should be OK -- still quite expensive,
though. Mine costed more ($630) because it was a LNIB sample :-(

In terms of 'bang for the buck' (sp?), this lens is nonsense. If you like
50mm perspective, you can get *twenty* 50/1.8 miJs for the cost of a single
40/2, but with almost the same size, great all-round performance and much
better handling -- the aperture ring of the 40 is hard to operate, unless
you have an UV filter screwed in, thus cancelling the size advantage. BTW,
I've put a Hoya UV because a B+W filter wouldn't allow turning the aperture
ring (!)

However, I *don't* like the 50mm perspective as a standard lens, and after
using a lot of 35 & 45mm lenses, I *knew* for sure that 40mm was the
'right' focal lenght for me ;-) Maybe not the best, technically speaking,
but I do like the image 'flavour' of the 40/2 *more* than that of the miJ.

HTH,

...
