Sorry, that is EE talk. It is the brightness channel of a crt. You have
X and Y axis, which in digital speak would be pixels, and the Z axis
or brightness, which would be the tonal range, dynamic range, number
of bits, number of stops of brightness range in film, etc. The terms
X, Y, Z axis are often used with regard to inputs to an oscilloscope.
