Oh I think you need one Rich.. or perhaps 2: one for keeping in the house, one for keeping in the car so that you don't have to remember to load it ;-). I have seen the walking sticks that Roger refers to, and they are pretty good. Trouble is, you don't have the fittings that the CamCane has. On the other hand the CamCane does not come with a wrist strap, only a leather and elastic shoulder strap.

I'm talking myself into one of these for hiking/travel. The Bogen monopod
is perfect for flatland/city/event photography where I'm at one primary
location, but otherwise bulky & heavy for serious hiking or travel.
