I hope the person at the camera store set them straight. The thing is, from
all the problems you described, it sounds like there's enough stuff that the
store person could blame without even touching on mistakes the shooter had
made with his shots (shooting into the sun). The store person could just
cover the film selection, improper storage, and bad processing and leave it
at that.

Of course what I've found is that a lot of people expect that the camera
will somehow take bad film, bad processing, and bad composition and somehow
still come out with Ansel Adams material. Consumers don't seem to understand
(or are unwilling) the difference in quality you get just with film
selection and better processing (not to mention better lenses and
composition).

But at least this person isn't completely into the "I only own my camera for
prestige" category. A friend of mine works at the local pro lab and there
was one person who went in and ordered a complete Hasselblad 503CW kit plus
the 45mm distagon I believe. It's been paid for and has been in for months
and he still hasn't picked it up. I was in one time and my friend was
showing the guy all the parts of the kit and explaining how to use it
(because the customer had no idea). One of the other people on the store was
actually taking pictures of this with the digital because they thought the
guy was finally going to take the stuff. In the end though, he just had my
friend box it all back and put it away. I think it had something to do with
he hadn't gotten his safety deposit box that he was going to store it in.

I should point out though, my friend is a very honest salesperson and would
not have pushed this sale. In fact, I'm pretty sure that he urged the
customer away from medium format and recommended that 35mm would be much
more suited to him. But obviously, this person was someone who was told that
"Hasselblad is the best" and that's what he wanted.
