I agree with Moose. Your eye "thinks" the object is beyond the mirror. The
image appears to be the sum of the distances away,
beyond the mirror.
Maybe an example would help. You are sitting in the driver's seat of a car.
The mirror is .5 metres away, and your subject is 1
meter behind YOU, in the back seat. That puts your subject 1.5 meters from the
mirror.
If you look at the mirror's frame, you eye focuses at 1/2 meter. If you look
into the mirror, your friend appears to be .5 meter
away plus the distance FROM THE MIRROR to the subject, 1.5 meters. So your eye
"sees" a 2 metre distance to your subject.
This makes sense. If you removed the mirror, you could reproduces the same
view (except for the left-right swap) by moving your
head .5 meters beyond the mirror, and looking at your subject directly. In
that example, your head is .5 meters from the old mirror
location and an additional 1.5 meters to the subject. 2 meters total.
