Use an expendable short lens and camera with a loooooong cable
release (or remote control with "wonderbrick")?

Oh, it's the "expendable" bit, isn't it? :-)

Actually, a "project" I have yet to get around to is to
photograph the goings-on down at Sydney' Central Station
(it's 4 minutes walk from home...so my excuses are inexcusable).
Apart from the commuter-trains, there's some nice country
and older trains/engines that pull in there...then there's
the people....

It's a bit safer when they're parked at a dead-end platform
though. I want to set myself to use one type of film and
one lens, because for me the restriction focusses me more.
(I've a preference for black and white film, and with
lens-choice I'm tossing up between my favourite 50/1.4
or my 35/2.8).

Of course, I've been procrastinating a while on this too...

Cheers
