[OM] OM-2s meter died

Well I was taking advantage of having the day of and it actually being nice
out and was out in the garden taking some more macro shots with the OM-2s.
This time I wasn't using the T10 flash.

The first roll of film went fine. The second however, began to develop
problems about halfway through the roll. I began to notice that the meter
reading in the viewfinder was acting very strangely. It would "bounce"
between a normal reading (say shutter speed of 125) no reading (well
massively underexposed, as low at the meter will read). At first this would
happen very quickly and then act normally but the frequency was increasing.
Sometimes changing the aperture would fix the problem temporarily, other
times switching to manual and back to auto would work. It still sounded like
it was using a proper exposure though when I took the shot. Now however, the
meter has completely "died" and I don't get any reading with it on auto. If
I switch to manual and set the lens to wide open and 1s then it shows proper
exposure (which I suspect is just a default value), this happens even with
the lens cap on. I've tried another lens just in case that was the problem
but the results are the same. The batteries were a fresh pair of Maxell SR44
Silver Oxide cells which I just put in last week. I had another brand new
pair of SR44's (never used, still sealed in their boxes), loading those had
the same effect. With each pair of batteries, the battery check worked fine
and the shutter speeds sound accurate (although I didn't test this too much
as I still have an unfinished roll in the camera).

Any ideas of what might be causing this? Is there anything I can try to fix
this or is it send to John H time?
