The issue with using 1/3A cells is how to assemble a pack which fits, given
that the original is spot welded closely end - to - end. I can't think of a
good way to emulate spot welding with solder.....

Any value added battery assembly house will add (solderable) spot welded tabs
(for a price!) and
in fact battery vendors ship standard product with tabs (or even stacks
although the OM pack is
too weirdly shaped ). If you buy tabbed cells you can solder the tabs together
with cells side by
side and bend over in a U, with very modest thickness increase. The GP website
has some details of
"standard stack assemblies" and tabbed cells. The large US electronic
stockist/retailer, Digikey
(see Digikey.com) carries all its Panasonic cells in both tabbed an untabed
versions.
(Unfortunately they don't carry 1/3A)

Another way that is often used with small cells, is to use a double sided
("bumped")adhesive
copper foil disk, specially made for this purpose. The assembly is heatshrunk
to stop any lateral
forces loosening the join. This is how silver oxide stacks are made by battery
assemblers. Whether
this can be used reliably, with a long stack of 1/3A 's, is something only an
assembly house could
answer.
