I've tried half a dozen alternatives - hard cases, soft cases, hip cases,
etc.etc.. I finally settled on a Lowepro Orion Trekker. I added a
couple of velcro straps to one side to carry a Gitzo. It goes around
the world with me, and I could not be happier with it. It's very well
built, has lots of adjustable options, and also has room for your other
around town or airport gear. It is very well padded, and nicely
designed. Furthermore, it looks just like a regular backpack, so it
doesn't get any special attention, and comes in a nice inconspicuous
black. If you wanted, you could put a huge tele lens in the upper
compartment.
