Many thanks to all who offered advise about my intermittent 2SP. I
checked all that you guys said and am using silver cells. Decided to
remove bottom cover as camera now stopped working altogether. I found a
very high resistance (6 Meg!) between battery terminal spring and
connection to diode (presumably reverse polarity protection). I lifted
the label in battery compartment and gently pulled on the wire which
promptly came away from the spring and has a green corroded end - so
there's the fault then! Confirmed the fault by connecting 3 volts
between diode and ground - camera working fine :-). I will try to repair
this but does anyone know of a source for new battery compartments?

Very best wishes to all, and apologies for my delayed thanks!
