How big is your subject? That's quite a range, from bugs to people!

For smallish items, you can't beat a ringlight. Widmere had a T-10 with power 
control for $299 recently -- a good price. They had the same thing with a 
crossed polarizer for ~$400 -- an even better price, if you can use it.

But with a guide number of 10, you aren't going to get far from your subject -- 
2 meters maximum at f2. For bigger stuff, you need multiple lights of low 
contrast (large size).

For sculpture photography, I use two 4'x5' softboxes and a smaller "sparkle 
light."
