Hi Wayne & co

I think that one has to recognise there are some (many ? ) conditions of light
where, if you take a photo, you KNOW you won't like the result.

If I'm bent on taking photos and I'm faced with the problem of bad / difficult
light, mostly I won't take the shot. I'll come back later when there's better
light. Or just flag it away making a mental note to maybe come back there
some time when the light is better. I know that if I take the shot, later I
will
chastise myself for wasting film and time. And never look at the shot again.

Right now where I am it is mid-afternoon; a scorchingly hot day with not a
cloud in the sky, and for the first 150 feet above ground there's heat haze.
There's no atmospheric pollution to speak of.

Colours are all bleached out, the sky is an intense pale blue, and shadows
are dark (although the haze / UV makes them paler than normal). I just
wouldn't waste my time taking an outside scenery / landscape shot in these
conditions. I KNOW I wouldn't like the results.

OK, but you are there and the time is now; what do you do? Maybe you can't
come back later. Take those Titicaca shots. Very contrasty, colours all over
the place.

A pro would probably have an answer. Other than come back later.

I suggest using a combination of UV and polarising filters, plus of course a
lens hood.

To keep your costs down I suggest you bring a Zuiko 50mm, perhaps an
MIJ. Filters are cheaper for the 49mm diameter.

For blue scenes ( I think you have to REALLY look at the scene and ask
yourself what it is you are seeing), take some warming filters, if the blue is
distasteful..

That clear sky, mid-day state is VERY difficult especially with Kodachrome
when there's UV around.

My 2 cents. What do others think?

BTW, that slide with what you think is lens flare; to my eyes that's a light
leak in the camera. I think you should take a close look at the foam. Also, I
couldn't see that the sun was shining "into" the lens for that shot..

Brian
