OK, that 2-piece idea would make more sense than a back replacement that I
had mentioned. But it also will add a lot of bulk/weight.. And I'm still

I think they may still have to end up replacing the back. Otherwise
how-else can they link the CCD to the external unit? The previous
"film canister replacement" unit was completely inside the camera
body and so there is no need to get anything out of the body. But
if this one has to talk to an external unit, then there must be some
connection, unless it is via some broadcast signal (and broadcasting
from inside a completely metal body is also problematic). Even an IR
connection will still require getting an opening for the IR unit to
"talk" to the external unit.

An opening is no problem on most of those newer cameras. Just aim through the window that is normally used to show the writing on the film canister.

Remember, the camera backs of film cameras are designed to house only a
thin layer of film between the film rails. So any sensor has to fit in
that space between the film plane and the shutter blades. That's not a
very big space to fit a CCD, with any associated transfer mechanism to
counteract focal plane shifts.

Exactly, so their only chance is to completely replace the back of the
camera -- and you know what that means, only one or two bodies will
be supported. And if they choose Nikon or Canon, they will be competing
directly against those companies and their own in-house digital SLRs.
This may be the best hope for them to develop an Olympus OM back and
corner the market for OM users.

You'd have more room if you removed the pressure plate. Plus, there is some (infinitesimal) amount of room between the film rails and the shutter curtain. The sensors would have to be in line with the rails, but a protective cover could extend forward a bit.
