"They have to be petals for zooms."

I'm with Moose. the goal of a lens hood is to be as long as possible,
without getting in the photo. With most zooms, the hood can be only a long
as possible for the shortest focal length. Petal, round, or rectangular, it
makes no difference (except that there are four places with no stuff on the
petal hood, so if a strong light is coming from just the right direction,
there's flare.

It's true that the top and bottom of a tulip hood can stick out farther that
it the hood were round, but a rectangular hood is still the best answer. It
is possible to design a fairly simple bayonet system, as it has already been
done. Frankly, the bayonet hoods for my Hasselbald and Xpan lenses are
easier to put on than the screw on ones for my Zuikos. Glance at the hood
(it's easier since they're rectangular or square), push on and turn. Not
three or four turns, just a quarter or so. Getting them off is even easier.

For a zoom, the hood/lens combination of the 35-70/3.6 is ideal. There must
be some reason that other manufacutrers haven't done the same, but I suspect
that cost is the main one.
