Tom:

I just received the October, 2002 issue of Popular Photography in the
mail today. A quote from Herbert Keppler's column:

"If sensors are only making images from the center area of each lens,
isn't this a waste of lens coverage? Couldn't the Canon and nikon
lenses be smaller, lighter, more moderate in price with less glass and
perhaps wider apertures and greater zooms? Yes indeed, and the cameras
could be smaller too-according to Olympus, who hopes to reveal just such
a new digital SLR system at September's International Photo Show
(Photokina) in Cologne, Germany. Compatibility with 35mm camera bodies
would be lost, but the gains in camera and lens compactness plus
extended zoom focal-length versatility should be enormous."

"While Olympus may show just one camera model at Photokina (rumored to
be an advanced amateur model priced around $2,000), an entire line of
digital SLRs for beginners to pros is envisioned. Not restricted to
using an already existing 35mm SLR body construction and large-diameter
lensmount like Nikon and Canon, there is no telling what form or shape
the new Olympus digital SLR camera may take. However, Olympus has had a
lot of experience producing high-performance lenses for small format
cameras; witness those for the half-frame Olympus Pen F SLR and their
lenses for Olympus microscopes. Olympus has promised an adequate
variety of interchangeable lenses, including wide-angles, but there is
no way the company could produce a sufficient number of lens designs at
once to compete with Nikon, and Canon's vat arrays. However, Olympus
has asked other lensmakers to produce lenses for the new camera to help
fill in the line. Whether other lensmakers will comply now or wait
until they see how well the Olympus camera is initially received remains
to be seen."
