G'day Lewis, and welcome to *my* world! (well, the OM world
too, but your choice sounds similar to mine)

I, too, own a wonderbrick (that is, a "modern SLR", in my
case a Canon EOS 50E/Elan IIE), and made the very same
decision, though I'm loathe to call your Yashica a
"wonderbrick" as I'm unfamiliar with it.

I too wanted a manual SLR.

For me, it was the same OM1 and Zuiko 50 1.4 that I
ended up with. I considered a Canon F1, but, well, look
how dainty the OM1 looks in comparison, especially with
the solidity it belies it's appearance with. I now have
a 135 3.5 and I've had a legacy 35 2.8 for a while.

For me, I love the OM1/50 1.4 combination. As "restrictive"
as it is when you're use to zooms, it's "restriction"
sometimes brings out the best in you artistically. I
believe it would have to be my "body-cap" for the OM1
(though, coming from the Canon, that 135 3.5 on the OM1,
with it's built-in metal hood, is as aesthetically pleasing
and viscerally enticing as a lovely Leica M6 - don't hate
me for that Zuikofolk! - with it's delectable size combo).

Also, being forced to set things yourself improves your use
of your "modern SLR", making you more aware of adjustments
it is making, and when to decide on adjustments yourself.

Of course, saying all that, I still love my EOS - they're just
different ways of working. The Canon is wonderful for me
when I'm taking sports (softball and touch footy) pictures
or pictures of 65lb Jack Russel Terriers on acid (otherwise
known as my two Airedale Terriers, Monty & Maggie), and
the OM1 is great for me when doing family (and social)
candids. Of course, that doesn't mean they're exclusively
used this way either.

I also generally have colour in the EOS and B&W (C41) in
the OM1. It's nice to have that choice without midroll
changes. I've actually had the 50 1.4 on the OM1 and
the 50 1.8 on the Canon, and just used them both at the
same time for the simultaneous film differences.

I think you'll love the OM1 (and 50 1.4 combo?). It's
a slightly different world to a "modern SLR", and, as
they say (and for both worlds) "Viva la difference!"
(well, I hope that's how you spell it). Oh, and as
they also say "Look Mum! No batteries!" (well, not
essential anyway :-) ).

Cheers
marc
