I know that it sticks out a bit, but from the section it looks like the
metal tube has the element within its depth. I have also seen others
display their lens standing on its rear w/o a lens cap - this is what
has me confused.

That's how they are made. Must be used on a bellows or extension
tube.......but you already knew that....didn't you?? /jnm
