On aspect of Gary Reese's lens tests is that for many he used a Bogen
lens
support, and the increased resolution and improved contrast resulting
from
this use, was usually quite noticeable.

Who amongst us uses one of these supports on a regular basis?

Gary is very careful to point out all of the test conditions involved in
these test to allow the reader to interpret the tests for themselves.
One could argue that the conditions Gary uses are the best of all
circumstances and that in the real world the lens may not reach the
potential shown in tests. This may be a good argument for the letter
grades Gary uses instead of less ambiguous numbers. The grades are only
valid in comparison to the other lens tested using the same methods.
Gary and others have pointed out in the past that to find out how a lens
performs in a particular situation, it must be tested in those
conditions.

For myself, I am proud to own one or two of the lenses in his tests.
Does it change the way the are used? Not at all, it is kind of like
owning the OM2 with serial number 1,000,000. Bragging rights just
aren't worth that much in this arena, it how the tools are used that
matters.
