I have one that isn't yellow... I'm not sure if that means it is not a
rare-earth glass version. Does anyone know the serial number range where the
rare-earth ends?

My impression is that its similar in sharpness and contrast to the early
version 50/1.4 or 50/1.8, IOW not up to a 50/1.8 MIJ or a high-s/n 50/1.4. I
think the 50/1.2 is about as good as the best of the Olympus normal lenses.
The 55/1.2 is bigger, heavier, and not as sharp in my pictures as my
high-s/n 50/1.4 lens. That said, it does produce a nice bright finder and it
focuses easily with the shallow depth-of-field. It does have a nice big
front element, which is cool to look at, and a nice metal shade with a lot
of chrome...
