Which ones? There are at least 5 versions of the 50/1.8 and at least 3 of the 50/1.4. What are your criteria? Some prefer the somewhat atmospheric quality (relative to later designs; glass and coatings have improved a lot since the early 70s) of the early single coated versions of one and/or the other.

If you want a nice sharp lens with good contrast and resistance to flare, the last version of either will more than do the job. For the 1.8, look for one with the words (including capitalization) "made in Japan" on the front ring. For the 1.4 look for one with a serial number over 1,090,000. (The actual change is around 1,085,000, according to Tom Scales) The difference in performance between these 2 will be a lot less than between early and late models of either speed.

Check out Gary Reese's lens tests at http://members.aol.com/olympusom/lenstests/default.htm for more info on resolution and contrast.

Is there a big difference between the 1.4 and 1.8 50mm in terms of picture quality?

Should I get one or just stick wiht the 1.8?
