I've found the best route to good flatbed scans is to scan at the
optical resolution of the scanner - ignoring screen resolution,
multiples thereof or any other complicated mathematics. My flatbed
scanner, like most of them, claims to be able to scan at 4800dpi but its
true resolution is actually 300dpi. The 'extra' resolution is a myth -
it comes from interpolation, and doesn't recover any extra image
information. So I scan at 300dpi and resize from there. Quality is
really quite good, even though the scanner is four years old and was
fairly low-end even then. For photo scanning, it has been superceded by
my film scanner, but for the sake of example, here's part of a CD inlay
that I scanned for another bit of my webpages: (quite a large file)

Hope that helps,
