Well, it's certainly not worth the difference in price of £150 if you aren't interested in the larger printing capacity. It's a good program that's certainly worth it if it comes free with something you want anyway. Photoshop LE has been replaced with Photoshop Elements, which lists for $99 here, for everything but freebie bundles. I got 5.0 LE with an Epson 1270 and find it very useful, but gather from reviews that Elements is as good or better. After about a year I upgraded to full Photoshop 6.0, but still use 5.0 LE quite often 'cause it loads much faster and does most things I need most of the time.

If you want to play with pics as well and scanning paper, make sure to get a scanner with a light in the lid and slide/neg adapter. You can probably then correct for the print exposure problem, but you may not be entirely happy with the detail available at the dpi resolutions of reasonably priced flatbed scanners.

Your specific proble of 'moon shots' could be solved by different printing. The problem is that the automated printers balance to the average brightness of the average consumer snapshot.. Since you have lots of total black in the frame, the printing process overexposes the bright moon image to bring the overall brightness up to the 18%. That blows out all the highlights. Since I scan (film scanner) and print images I like, I don't know anything about getting processors to adjust your prints, but others on the list have commented extensively on many options. Alternatively, get a longer lens or bigger telescope, so that the moon fills the frame!

I would welcome some comments/advice on the merits of PhotoshopLE.
Thus, I am hoping shortly to buy a scanner and a printer for my recently assembled computer so that I can play with some of my photographs, as well as scanning and printing paper documents (ie the Scanwit does not meet my needs). But I am not inclined to seriously consider buying the full version of Photoshop without much more experience of scanning photographs - it seems to be agreed that it is good, but it is a lot of money. However, I find that some printers come with Photoshop5.0LE bundled with it for about UKP150 more than the next model down eg Epson Perfection Photo 1290 cf E.P.P. 890. I certainly do not need an A3 printer instead of an A4 version but like the look of 5.0LE - which does not seem to be available separately according to the Adobe website. The alternative bundled software on the cheaper printer is sometimes PhotoDeLuxe. Assuming that my chosen scanner is adequate, one thing which I know I want to do is to reprint where I can see that detail has been lost in the standard printing process eg pictures of a lunar eclipse where no details of the moon's surface are visible on my consumer grade prints but I can see them on the negative using a loupe. So, would Zuikoholics expect a beginner at scanning to be able to benefit significantly from having Photoshop5.0LE?
