While my Gitzo 320 with a 3-way Manfrotto head is my favourite ( straight
from John Shaw's published recommendation) I also have a small Linhof in a
tripod carry-bag. Hasn't got the head movements of the Manfrotto, but it's
stable despite being light. I once had a bigger Linhof; got burned up when my
van was stolen and trashed / ignited. Also very good.
I prefer the Linhof leg-clamping system to the Gitzo method. Much easier.
Suggest looking on the Bay for a Linhof, if you live where postage wouldn't
kill the trade.
