One thing I used to do:  With the strap lug completely out, tape over hole
on the outside with scotch tape.  Fill inside of hole with 5 minute epoxy
and allow to dry.  Cut strap lug off so finished cut is flat.  Reassemble.
remove scotch tape and paint epoxy black.
