Op-Tech and some other straps come with soft plastic protectors. Several
different design details, but all keep the ring from rubbing. Some still
leave a nylon strap rubbing against the paint, which is ok for chrome
cameras, but not so good long run with black enamel. I bought one black
OM-1 with a strap with snap hooks for quick release from the lug rings.
The owner had put heavy, somewhat flexible vinyl tubing, some kind of
electrical insulation, I think, over the hooks and up to where the strap
widened out. It's an old camera with no wear on the paint from the
strap, so the technique works.

Not using a strap at all is also a good way to protect against brassing. Most of
the time I shoot without a strap on the camera. The exception is some sporting
events where I am often shooting with two cameras.
