Thanks!  Unfortunately I've not removed the top cover on the 4t and lack a
repair manual.  Any "tricks" I should look out for (like the door spring
flying) in removing the cover?

There are pressure sensitive rubber conducting pads inside the top cover
between the top circuit and the buttons on the outside of the top.  Cleaning
those would solve some or all of your problems.
