Subject: Leonid Meteor Shower
Good morning/day/evening to all;
This is a brief report of the Leonid Meteor shower from the High Plains
of Wyoming. Time 0300-0500 MST 18 November 2001
Photo site location: 18 miles west of Laramie, Wyo. USA, elevation 7,400
ft ASL.
Sky conditions: mostly clear with a very few small clouds on the west
horizon above the Medicine Bow Mountains (peak elevation 12,013 ft) 20
miles to the west of the site. Some small clouds on the SE horizon, one
medium size cloud over the city of Laramie, (pop. 28,000). Clear skies
to the north. Visual Limiting Magnitude 6+ possibly approaching 7.
Quite a bit of sky glow from light pollution to the east (Laramie),
southeast (Cheyenne), & southsoutheast (Ft.Collins, Colo.)
Photo equipment: 3 cameras on a single platform- Olympus OM1n
w/50mmf/1.4; Olympus OM2 w/24mm f2 Vivitar; Canon VI-L w/50mm f/1.2
Canon.
Exposure time were 5-10 minutes.
Films: Fuji 100/1000 chrome to be processed for 11min in E-6
Fuji 100/1000 chrome to be cross-processed in C-41
Fuji NPZ, IE 800, to be processed C-41
We did not calculate rates but estimate 200-300/hour. Meteors were
visible in all directions after 0300 hours MST with some very bright and
a few fire-balls. Some colored trails, notably red, blue, green mostly
to the northwest. Some long and longlasting trails.
