Perhaps there would be less confusion if the CCD & LCD sizes were stated in
mm rather than inches & fractions of an inch.

It's worse than that. The 2/3" and such designations don't actually
refer to the size of the chip (focal length comparisons will make
this clear) but to the diameter of the vidicon tube that would hold
the sensor if you were using an old-style vacuum-tube television camera.
2/3", for example, is a chip diagonal of something like 6 or 7 mm.
