Ralf,

You could also consider a PCcard SCSI card. I have an Adaptec (either the
1460 or 1480 work).  Very handy. I use it to connect a lot of different
devices.

I don't think anything else in the price range is of comparable quality,
with USB.  The Nikon LS-40 (IV) is USB, but it is much more expensive.
