As everyone else is doing it, I thought I'd join in too.

My first Olympus was an OM-10 bought from City Camera Exchange in or near
Cannon Street station, London, on the 7th August 1991 (such a decisive
moment in my life, I even remember the day !! Nothing to do with the
receipt I just found !!) It was, of course, 2nd hand, and came with the
usual Zuiko 50mm 1.8 lens (which I still use on my current OM-2n).

Being fairly young at the time, I appreciated the full auto functions of the
camera. As I got a little older my father allowed me to use his OM-1MD on
"special occasions" - initially I thought it was just a kind of a way of
convincing me that his camera was better, but then I learned to love the
manual way in which the OM-1 works. Somehow you really have to think more
about what you are doing, and understand the processes involved, when things
are that manual. And his rather tasty Zuiko 50mm 1.4 lens helped seal my
addiction.

So, as the years passed and my OM-10 went the way of quite a lot of OM10's
(so it would seem) with the sticky shutter problem (something to do with
magnets somewhere ?!) I started to look for a new camera. It never even
crossed my mind to look for anything other than Olympus. Partly because of
the collection of accessories I'd built up by then (Tokina 28-70 lens with
Macro, Vivitar Flash, and a Vivitar 75-205 with cross matched 2x multiplier)
but mainly because I just loved the Olympus cameras. The 75-205, I should
point out, is not actually mine. Strictly speaking, it belongs to my
father. Some years back I convinced him that he really needed it. He used
it once. I kept borrowing it, to the point where he "suggested" I should
keep it, as it spent more time on my camera than on his !!

So, with my search for a replacement / upgrade for my OM-10 I found this
list (thank you, by the way !). After deciding I wanted the Manual
functions of the OM-1, with the possibility of Auto functions available on
the OM-10 (and the lack of money for an OM-4Ti or even an OM-3 !!!) I opted
for the OM-2 / OM-2n (eventually finding a rather gorgeous example of the
OM-2n).

A truly beautiful camera. I'm still learning. After initially thinking I
would use the Auto function most, just switching to Manual when I wanted to
compose something "arty", I think I might have used the Auto functions maybe
twice !! Maybe I should also consider investing in an OM-1 as well ?!

On a final note, I have a flash (Vivitar Auto Thyristor 4600 System) which
was bought to work with the OM-10. I've never really fully understood all
the technicalities of Flash and the way the camera / flash interact to get
the correct exposure. Anyone got any idea if this Flash will work OK with
the OM-2n, or will I be losing much of it's functionality ? I know this
info is probably available in the archives so I'll trawl through there too,
but thought someone may have personal experiences to share.

Right, I've taken up enough of your bandwidth.

Thanks,

Jon

PS : Any thoughts on a Xmas exchange via email ? Kinda like a TOPE Xmas
Exchange ? I know it's the kinda thing we can all look at on each others
websites (if we have them), but is an easier way than snail mail for those
of us "abroad". The snail mail to USA from UK would have to be posted well
in advance of Christmas, and the email one may get a wider response ? Not
proposing a replacement for the other idea, just one to add to it. Possible
rule being that the image couldn't be available anywhere else on the web
until after Xmas ?
