I use ConeTech's Piezography system for B&W printing. I tried MIS inks (which are similar to Lyson and others). The big issue with these multiple grey/black inksets is that you need to partition the different tonal ranges to correspond to the differnt grey inks. Otherwise you will get dark dots bleeding over into light areas, which looks poor. I used to have nice light faces stippled with little tiny dark dots. I fiddled with several complex workflows that have been published to handle this issue, and was never satisfied with any of them.

The Piezography system handles all that stuff for you. The prints are remarkable, rivaling traditional B&W silver printing for tonality and range. The downside is that you have to buy THEIR inks and buy their software program to drive the printer. But I wouldn't go back for all the tea in china.

Be aware that with any of these systems, you have to dedicate a printer to B&W printing. You CAN NOT switch cartridges back & forth. You'll ruin the cartridges in the process.

BTW, The cheapest way to go is for the Continuous Feed system.

It seems every time I get out the OM to try something new, or that I haven't
done for some time, a learning curve appears again.

A few weeks ago we were on a plane flying out to Greece. Decided to reach
for the OM4 and take a few shots of some reasonably spectacular scenery out
of the window. Previously the OM4 had been used with the winder 2, but this
time I was travelling light. After the first shot I wound the film on, which
was half way through a roll. Well actually, it wasn't. There wasn't a film
in the camera. Thought it wound on a bit too easy. I can't remember what
other once in a lifetime, prize winning shots I had taken on this "roll".
Probably just as well.

Wrong ASA? Been there, done that, as well. When I do it though, it's usually
slide film. Not too forgiving.

Slightly OT, but I am wondering if anyone on the list has used Lyson or
similar Quad black inks for B&W printing, as I am thinking of taking the
plunge by buying the Epson 1160.
