Thanks all, for the good advice.  I just picked up a grey card, so will start 
learning that.  I noticed a fella using one up at the Bellingham Highland 
Games (he was shooting a Leica).  And will try the meter-off-the-palm 
technique, as well as the +1 and +2 stops.

The gal I'm interested in photographing is relatively light skinned, and I've 
noticed that in P&S pics of her we've taken at birthday parties, at work, 
etc., that her skin tone turns out somewhat darker than it really is.  So the 
+2 might be the way to go.

I'll also look for that new Shutterbug magazine.
