This is a very old technique for illuminating large rooms, ships and
trains. I suppose it is used in large caves also. Set the lens to
minimum aperture (usually f22), focus at infinity, and set the camera on
auto exposure. If the room is really dark, you can get many pops of the
flash off before the shutter closes.

The popper has to be careful not to get between the lens and the poppee unless you want his silhouette.
