Chris:

Could it just be a case of "tolerance stackup", i.e. the winder is fine,
the body is fine, but each is at the edge of acceptable tolerance?

Did you actually clean the contacts in the battery pack, or just inspect
them? Winder "A" might have a heavier current draw (for some reason),
and might "exercise" the battery pack more than winder "B". Sometimes a
contact can have corrosion on them, even if they don't look too bad.
BTW, Wal-Mart had a neat little item in the auto department. It looks
like a crayon, but is actually a fine abrasive (made by the 3M
Company). It's apparently used in auto body repair to "erase"
corrosion. You might try using something to brighten up the contacts,
to see if that helps.

Or, maybe the winder just has 20 years of old grease and case lint to
deal with!
