I remember reading about this a year or so ago in one of the photo
magazine's columns. It seems the JCII was disbanded several years ago, as it
was deemed no longer necessary. The whole point of these stickers relates to
the place of Japan in the post WWII commercial world. In those simpler
times, products from that country were considered cheaply made knock-offs of
better quality goods made elsewhere, like the USA or Germany. In order to
help the fledgling camera industry, this inspection process was developed.
It was, if I remember, supposed to apply to all camera products made in
Japan. Now, Japanese cameras, like Japanese cars, have a reputation for
reliability, so this extra expense is removed.

Oh, and here's an example of an OT post:

I had just finished voting in the Florida election for the Republican
candidate, or was it the Democratic one, and had visited my church, the only
right and true religion. I got into my gas-guzzling SUV, or was it my
Corvette, and was going fishing. I don't use rod and reel, you know, I use
my semi-automatic rifle, which I own thanks to my god-given right as
expressed in the constitution. I only shoot the Democratic fish, or is it
the Republican ones...

You get the idea
