I was reviewing the archives today on this very subject.  I believe alkaline
can be used but shouldn't be as their voltage falls off over time (so the
metering will be affected).  To tie this in to another thread (OM-1N - K&S
CLA and Morgan Sparks' leathers), I would ask Scott Gomez to see what
battery K&S used after his OM-1N meter conversion.  When my CLA and
conversion were done there last summer, the camera came back with a 625A
(alkaline) battery. :-(
