I've had several cleaned (lens CLA) and they seem to be fine afterwards --
no worse for the wear.

As for pricing, it depends on the lens. A 'regular' lens is in the $40-60
range. Some, like the 300/4.5, are in the $100. So, before you bid or buy an
'oily' one, get an estimate.
