Usually try to mush them while fresh (first 15 minutes or so). But 
have used a toaster oven, and the hot hood of a car, to keep the 
emulsion soft for longer. Up to a couple of hours, you can re-heat 
them but that's pushing it and not always successful. Not being a 
smoker, I'd guess a tacking iron would work for partial heat. It is 
fun to squish the colors.
