Gitzo is rightly considered the finest tripod available in all sizes except
the very top and bottom ends, and their price reflects this. Before I bought
a carbon fiber Gitzo, I would consider the price differential between the
carbon fiber version and the equivalent metal one. You'll find that the
price per lost ounce is rather substantial. Of course, if you're climbing
Mt. Everest...

a lighter weight alternative is the Tiltall. I've heard bad things about the
latest (imported) version, but I have two, the original version by the
Italian brothers in New Jersey, with the fixed head, and the later version,
from Uniphot, with the removable head. Look in any good commercial shooter's
closet, and you'll find a well used example of one of these. The only fault
I can find it that they are really a little short, an extra six inches in
the legs would be nice. I also use it a lot with a Hasselblad.

And the head...who wouldn't want an Arca Swiss?
