You can get good bodies on eBay, and elsewhere, but even so, eventually you'll
want to have them Cleaned / Lubricated / Adjusted by a professional. Since
minor mechanical problems that don't require too much in the way of new parts
can be fixed as a matter of course during a CLA, and both the new and current
bodies would need it, my vote is to fix up the existing bodies. Besides,
there's an emotional charge you'll get out of using your dad's restored
equipment that you won't get from stuff you bought from a stranger on eBay. 
Maybe a small charge if you buy from a list member...

Ouch! This might be tougher. When I had my Tokina zoom repaired, they wanted
$70.00 minimum, no matter what they did to it.  Add to that the cost of a front
element, which may or may not still be available, and it might be cheaper to
buy another.

Any chance the broken front element is just the filter?
