I think there's little chance they will get back to him if he asks. 

I had an auction for a scanner ( rf receiver ) canceled once because
someone at eBay apparently thought it had been modified to receive
cellular frequencies. It had not. I wrote them repeated letters asking
why the auction had been canceled, but never got a reply.

Fortunately for me, I had gotten an email from the high bidder before
eBay canceled the auction. In my reply, I had give him my name and phone
number. He called shortly after the cancellation and bought the item
from me over the phone.

eBay's hard nose tactics cost them my listing fee, plus their cut of the
$150 sale.

As I've said before, it will be interesting to see if their greed
becomes their downfall. The more they attempt to squeeze from their
customers, the buyers and sellers, the more attractive "side deals"
become.
