I don't know what Ken uses, but I use preformed foam pipe insulation on
the top section of each leg.  It is easily obtainable at most home supply
stores and very inexpensive.  Not only is it warmer to handle, it
provides padding when you are carrying the tripod, whether over the
shoulder or on a sling.  I've ended up leaving it on my tripod year
round.
