Greetings,

Over this past summer I purchased the Minolta Dimage Scan Dual, which will scan
anything up to 6x9. When scanning medium format images, the scanner realigns the
optics to spread the CCD coverage path to cover the width of the film. This
effectively reduces the scanning resolution to about 1200dpi. While this isn't
extremely high, the optical qualities of the larger film seem to decrease the
output resolution I need. I also use the Genuine Fractals plugin for photoshop
to increase the resolution when it is required. I think the newer version (Dual
II) supports some other modes that effectively increase scanning resolution. All
in all, it's a very nice unit for what is a comparatively small pricetag.

Another option that might be worth looking at if you have the desire to tinker
is to find an old "Leafscan 35/45". You can find them on ebay for under $1000.
They usually support up to 4x5 at extremely high resolution (~5000dpi). The
problem is that they're kinda big, very slow (up to 20min per hi res scan), and
use an hpib interface. Not long ago, they were a staple in the publishing world.

Best regards,

Bill

Doesn't Minolta make a slide scanner capable of both 35mm and MF? I
believe it is called the "Dual" something or another? Depends on your
definition of high resolution I suppose. I use an older Minolta (Quick
Scan 35) and it does a decent job for me.
