The storage media may last for ever but will the machinery needed to
read the media be around in the future? For example, eight track
cassettes and 3½" floppy disks are examples of storage media for which
the readers are relatively hard to find and maybe will become next to
impossible to find in the future. Who is to say that today's read and
write CDs will be readable in ten years? By then today's readers may be
obsolete. I still prefer to keep my original Kodachrome slides as the
original storage media!
