Hum. I guess this might have been mentioned but just thought I would
comment. I picked up one of those 35$ new 50mm f1.8 that Brian mentioned.
I compared it to an older 50f1.8 I have (it is around 20 years old). It has
f.zukio written on it but i'm pretty sure it is mc. Anyways while Gary's
test might show that these two lenses are optically similar, the build quality
is definitly not the same. While I have no complaints ($35 is not bad for a
brand new 50mm lens of any build quality), the new "made in japan" simply
do not compare to the old lenses made in japan. The new one I think is all
plastic (the aperature ring clicks sound plasitc like). The old one feels like
and is obviously metal. My old one has few specs inside (I think fungus but
noting that should harm optical performance -- I left it in a damp place for
10 years). I figured I'd pick up a new one and use the old one as a beach lens.
Now I think I'll use the new one as a beach lens :)
