I would (and do often) go with the 35-70 3.5-4.5 zoom. Here is a repeat
(edited) of some of my comments from a thread on that lens:

I have used the 3.5-4.5 for years (purchased mine when they first came
out) and have always been pleased with the results. It is one of the
lightest zoom lenses in the entire line (and weighs only grams more than
most of the 'normal' lenses) , is very compact and performs well in
'macro' mode. I do a lot of cycle touring, climbing, and backpacking
and this is the one lens I ALWAYS take. Because of it's compact size, 49
mm filter, and low weight I don't agonize over whether to bring it or
not. If I want to go very light it is often the ONLY lens I take with me.
It performs well optically at all stops, and when set to f4 can be used
to 'zoom-in' for spot metering.
