[OM] Good conduct report on OM-2S

Dear All,

I want to report my good experience with my OM-2S over the last few
months. I apologise that some of what follows has been said in earlier
postings but I thought it might be useful to put it all together,
especially for new members who might be interested in the model.

Back in March of this year, my OM-2S started playing up, the first
problem I?d had with it in almost 15 years. It sometimes needed two or
more strokes of the film advance lever before I could fire the shutter.
This mostly happened if the camera had been put away for a few hours or
days. It tended to settle down after shooting a couple of frames. A
list member told me this was probably sticking levers and explained how
I could clean them with acetone to fix the problem. He also warned me
that the camera could eventually jam if I didn?t take action. Turned
out he was right! It jammed up even before I could finish taking the
film that was in the camera and attempt the repair.

Not being brave enough to tackle a film transport jam, I took the 2S,
with my fingers crossed, to a local repairer in Jakarta. He was not an
Olympus specialist but very experienced anyway and he was able to unjam
it - for only US$10.00! It worked just fine for the next three months
but then the sticking levers started to manifest themselves again. This
time I acted immediately, as instructed by the helpful List member
(who, I think, prefers to remain anonymous). After judicious pouring of
acetone repeatedly in the right place, using a paper tissue to prevent
it from running into other areas, I seem to have been successful. Up
until now, no more ?double winding?; however, if it should stars
playing up again, then I guess I?d have to try the repair once again.
It?s not difficult, though.

The other bit of good news is that I put new SR44 (silver oxide)
batteries in the 2S in the first week of June and they?re still going
strong. I haven?t used a large number of films in that time but I have
used flash quite a bit, which is an added drain on the batteries (my 2S
has the green flash ready LED in the viewfinder, which means it uses
the camera batteries, not the flash batteries, for the LED). Nearly 4
months from one set of SR44 cells might not sound very exciting but it
is quite good for the 2S, in my experience. The batteries in this
camera fail quite soon and without any warning at all - no flashing
battery test light or intermittent beeping, despite what the manual
says, just an dead camera with a locked-up mirror! It was serious
enough in the OM-4 for Olympus to improve the circuitry and no doubt
they would have done so in the 2S also if the model had not been
dropped.

Overall, I have had pretty good service from the OM-2S over the 15
years or so that I?ve owned and used it. Plenty of people love this
camera, although I know that others have had unfortunate experiences
with it and wouldn?t trust it again. It?s always given me excellent
exposures. I?ll be intrigued to try the tests carried out by Warren
with long exposures, since I also own a 2N.

Regards,

=====
Ray
