I'd been having similar problems in the opposite direction with buying on
eBay. Sellers say that they will "ship world-wide" but then insist on
payment through PayPal, which doesn't yet operate in Europe, and I had to
resort to risking cash in the post.

If the auction was by Yahoo, Amazon, MSN or eBay, you can use BidPay,
www.bidpay.com, buying a Western Union money order in sterling on line with
a credit card - the seller may have to register as such with BidPay. If not,
you can do much the same on line with http://www.westernunion.com/.  I
haven't had one of their money orders to test whether there's any problem
paying one into my bank account, but if there is, the seller can go to the
same website, enter his location and postcode and he will be provided with a
list of Western Union agents in his area.
