I have thought a bit about this myself. The current problem with
digital-originals is 1) storage of all that data -- 35mm slides are far
smaller and robust; and 2) repurposing the images later -- currently
easier to do with analogue, just re-scan and re-edit.

BTW I don't think the data storage problem will ever resolve itself, it
has been a major problem since day-one with computers...

punch card -> paper tape -> magnetic tape -> floppy disk -> CD-ROM -> ????

...each new technology pushes out an existing technology and requires a
cmplete conversion of data.

My ideal system is this:

analogue originals: OM System and silver-based film
digital editing: scan processed negs and trannies
computer prints: inkjet or whatever is convenient

This has all of the advantages of the full-digital system with just a 1
hour wait for the processing, PLUS the opportunity to easily store and
repurpose the images later.
